Instructional Worm Box Kit
Set Up:
- Place bag of dry shredded newspaper in a clean pale.
- Add water to newspaper and mix until paper is wet, but not dripping/soaking.
- Remove wet newspaper by handful and place into the bottom of the box (to a level of approximately 2 inches).
- Empty bag of worms into the box and spread, leaving a 1-2 inch paper border.
-
You may feed the worms now by placing a handful of small pieces of vegetables or fruit, or you may wait until tomorrow. Remember that one pound of worms
will eat up to ½ lb of food scraps per day!
- Add remaining damp/wet newspaper on top (you have just made a worm sandwich).
- Place a tray under the box to catch any compost that may fall out
- Place box out of direct sunlight away from extreme heat or cold, and do not place on a washer or dryer.
- Spray pile with water daily.
Starter Care:
- Always pick up the top layer of newspaper to feed your worms; then place the shredded damp paper back on top.
-
When the box has leveled to the third hole from the bottom (approximately half full) and most of the bottom layer of newspaper has turned to compost, push
the pile to one side and stop watering/feeding.
- Add bottom layer of shredded newspaper to empty side repeating steps 1-9 (the worms will move to the new bedding).
- Use sifter to separate compost and add to your garden soil.
